The Fragile Aumakua of Hawai’i

The Fragile Aumakua of Hawai’i

An acrylic painting showing a Nene, or Hawaiian Goose, eating ‘ōhelo ‘ai berries on Kauai Island.

The Fragile Aumakua of Hawaii, like the name suggests, depicts Hawaii’s state bird: the Nene. The name refers to the Nene as an “Aumakua” because it is believed to be one of Hawaii’s guardian spirits (‘Aumakua’ meaning “personal or family god/guardian). The reason why the title specifically refers to it as a “Fragile Aumakua” is because despite their cultural significance, they are endangered due to human activity. The piece is meant to depict a Nene’s typical presence in one of their natural habitats, eating berries and standing upon the Kauai volcano. The artwork is meant to evoke calmness and awe, displaying the beauty of both Hawaii and their unique ecology.
